Known for its innovative crystal embellishments, Area, the New York based label is taking sparkling styles to the next level for Spring Summer 2020. You get the notice sign immediately when you enter the Gallery I at Spring Studios on Saturday: crystal fringes hanging from the ceiling to the floor as curtains between seat sections, gently swaying as people pass by, shimmering under the dim lights. Relaxation music in the background, with birds singing from time to time, making me feel like sitting in a crystal palace and adding some mysterious vibes to the venue.

As lights turned up and percussion music became faster, a model with gold chains covered new wave white suit appeared on the runway. Name plates with ‘Area’ in different languages attached to the chains hanging throughout the suit jacket and trousers. In fact, this is one of the most symbolic designs this season. You can find the name plates on different outfits and pieces, such as a black mini dress, gold Lamé pants, coral plunge bodysuit, houndstooth cropped blazer and skirt etc.

The girls sitting behind me wowed at one of the most extravagant designs of the evening – a gold and crystal woven gown with bird cages and fringes on the hemline. The white shirt underneath and flower patterns give this sparkling ‘armour’ a modern and lively touch. With the sophisticated jewelries and even 3D crystal makeup, it would be demanding to not leave any impressions.
The lavishly accessorized designs this season would certainly draw extra attention from street style crowds, Coachella enthusiasts and celebrity party frequenters. Personally, I probably would hesitate to wear the full outfits to evening events, as I’m afraid the chains would get hooked up on bathroom door handles or knock off someone else’s glass. But I will be looking to style up with their classic fringe clutch and slippers, or a single garment of the nameplate bodysuit .
Area is a young yet rapidly growing label founded in 2014 in Lower Manhattan by Parsons masters graduates Beckett Fogg and Piotrek Pansczczyk. Named after one of New York’s most popular nightclubs in the 80’s, it soon gained celebrity followers such as Kendall Jenner, Katy Perry, Bella Hadid and the Kardashians.
